Mauritius
Seven days on Mauritius’s east coast, traced out from a single base toward the island’s two faces — the mangrove channels of the north-east, the basalt cliffs of the south.
The days move outward and home again: mornings in the lagoon’s quieter half, where a kayak is the right pace; afternoons south through Chamarel and its forested interior, within reach of Le Morne, where Mauritius’s history sits closest to the surface. Between those edges sits the island’s grain — time in Port Louis among its markets and history, the authentic Creole cooking that is done at home rather than for show, the small producers and growers we have come to know.
Your base is Constance Prince Maurice, on the east coast — Green Globe certified, set on its own peninsula above the lagoon, restrained and considered, and serious about its place in the landscape that holds it.
Forget the postcards. The real Mauritius is a symphony of sizzling street food in a bustling capital, the quiet glide of a kayak through a protected mangrove forest, the taste of a family recipe shared in a local’s home, and the powerful silence atop a mountain that is a UNESCO monument to freedom.
This is an escape for those who believe luxury is not just about material comfort, but about access—access to genuine experiences, to local stories, and to a deeper understanding of a destination. We have designed this week to immerse you in the island’s soul, connecting you with the artisans, guides, and hosts who are the true guardians of its culture.
Arrival & Architectural Serenity
Upon arrival at SSR International Airport, your private driver will greet you for a seamless, comfortable transfer to Constance Prince Maurice. Nestled on a private, 60-hectare peninsula, this resort is a masterpiece of architectural harmony, designed with nature in mind. Settle into your suite, surrounded by lush vegetation and tranquil lagoons, and spend the rest of the day acclimatising to the gentle pace of island life.
The Hidden Waterways of Amber Island
Today is dedicated to the island’s quiet, natural defenders. You’ll be guided on a sea kayak excursion to Amber Island, a protected nature reserve. Paddle through the intricate channels of a thriving mangrove forest, a vital ecosystem that acts as a nursery for marine life and a natural barrier for the coastline. Our expert guide will explain the critical role these mangroves play, offering a perspective on Mauritius that few travellers ever see.
A Poignant Climb: Le Morne Brabant
Journey south to tackle one of the island’s most iconic and moving hikes. Le Morne Brabant is a majestic basaltic mountain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is also a profound symbol of the fight for freedom. This was once a sanctuary for escaped slaves. Your hike is a challenging, rewarding journey that culminates in breathtaking panoramic views of the “underwater waterfall” illusion. It is an experience that is both physically exhilarating and deeply humbling.
The Creole Kitchen with Rosemonde
Experience Mauritian hospitality at its most authentic. Today, you will join our local host, Rosemonde, for an immersive cooking experience. The journey begins at the vibrant local market, where you’ll help select fresh produce, fragrant spices, and the day’s catch. Back in her home kitchen, Rosemonde will share her family’s recipes and stories, teaching you the secrets of a true Creole menu. This is more than a cooking class; it’s an invitation to share a meal and a genuine connection.
Port-Louis: A City of Layers
Discover the living, breathing heart of Mauritius in its capital. Your walking tour of Port-Louis is a journey through its complex history and vibrant present. You’ll explore the UNESCO-listed Aapravasi Ghat, the 19th-century immigration depot, wander through the historic Company’s Garden, and dive into the colourful chaos of the Central Market. Along the way, you’ll sample the best of the city’s street food—think warm dholl puri and spicy gâteaux piments—understanding the island’s diverse culture one bite at a time.
Traditional Sailing & A Secluded Islet
Return to the water for a day of timeless, traditional boat sailing. You will board a classic wooden pirogue, helmed by a local fisherman who will share his deep connection to the sea. Let the wind guide you across the turquoise lagoon, far from the tourist crowds. You’ll stop for a snorkel in a pristine spot before landing on a secluded, desert islet for a delicious BBQ lunch of fresh fish and local flavours, prepared just for you. It is a day of pure, simple, and profound island beauty.
A Fond Farewell to Paradise
Enjoy a final, leisurely breakfast at the resort. Reflect on a week of connection and discovery before your private driver transfers you to the airport for your onward journey, leaving you enriched and with a true understanding of the soul of Mauritius Island.
For this itinerary, your home is more than just a hotel; it’s a partner in our conscious travel ethos. Constance Prince Maurice is a jewel of the Indian Ocean, renowned for its floating restaurant, intimate suites, and exceptional service.
It is a luxury that whispers, rather than shouts. More importantly, it is a Green Globe Platinum certified property, demonstrating a long-term commitment to sustainability.
From protecting its own mangrove forests and engaging in coral restoration to rigorously sourcing from local suppliers, its philosophy of “True by Nature” ensures your stay is not only luxurious but also in harmony with its environment.
From the moment you land to your final departure, your comfort is our priority. This itinerary includes:
How difficult is the hike up Le Morne Brabant, and how long does it take?
Three to four hours round trip. The first half is a shaded walk under the canopy; the second half steepens into a scramble over basalt that asks for reasonable fitness and mobility. The summit clears to a long view of the southwest lagoon and the underwater waterfall illusion below. A certified Mauritian guide walks with you throughout — for the climb itself, and for the history of the mountain, which is what gives it its UNESCO standing.
Are all transfers private?
Yes — every transfer is private, from the airport collection through every day on the road. No shared shuttles, no scheduled departures.
What should I pack for this trip?
Light, breathable layers — linens and cottons work well in the climate. Swimwear, and something elegant but unfussy for evenings. For the active days: sturdy trainers or hiking shoes for Le Morne; swimwear and a rash guard for the kayak; comfortable walking shoes and modest cover for cultural sites in Port Louis. A hat and high-factor sunscreen earn their place in any bag heading to Mauritius.
What makes this itinerary conscious?
Three things, in practice. The activities are low-impact by design — kayak, hike, walk. The base, Constance Prince Maurice, holds Green Globe Platinum certification, the highest tier of an independent third-party auditor. And every guide, host, and operator across the week is local: Rosemonde in her own kitchen, the fisherman captaining his own pirogue, the certified guide on Le Morne. The fees stay where the work is done.
Can this itinerary be customised?
Yes — this is a blueprint, not a fixed schedule. We adjust the pacing, add a quieter day, or swap an activity for something closer to your interests. A morning at an artisan’s workshop, an afternoon at a rum distillery, a longer stretch on the water — say what you’d like, and we’ll build around it.
What is the cooking experience with Rosemonde like?
A table d’hôte — meaning you are a guest in someone’s home, not a student in a kitchen. The morning starts at the market, choosing produce and the day’s catch alongside Rosemonde. The afternoon is in her kitchen: the recipes, the techniques, the small adjustments she makes that she may or may not have learned to name. The day ends at her table, with the meal you helped make and whoever from the family is around for it.
